Activities assistant Ms. Brant and Veterans reflect on Overland’s 15th annual Veterans Day Celebration

Last November, Overland hosted their first after-school Veterans Day celebration.  “This year we wanted to do something a little different and more inclusive,” Event planner Ms. Brant told us. “Normally, we host a Veterans Day breakfast, but because of parking limitations and the construction of our new pool, we decided to hold an evening ‘Hall of Honor.” The change actually allowed more people to attend.”

The event saw a wall of fame featuring photos, artwork, and essays about Veterans. Assistant principal, Ms. Anderson, submitted photos of her time in the armed forces. “My service meant a lot to me; it humbled me in ways I never considered. I spent my 19th birthday overseas serving in Operation Enduring Freedom (War directly connected to 911).”

Both Anderson and Brant highlighted the excitement of seeing what our community put together.  “The submissions were absolutely amazing this year. I received so many wonderful photos and heartfelt messages from staff, students, and community members honoring their loved ones who have served. Each submission told a story, and together they created a powerful visual of gratitude and remembrance.” Brant told me.

“I loved seeing the photos that our community shared,” Anderson added. “Learning new things about you all is always bucket filler for me, and the sense of pride. Those who serve sacrifice so much, and sometimes it is hard to describe that experience to others.”

Planning this event was a labor of love for Brant. The military is something very near and dear to her and her family’s heart. “I plan these events because it’s deeply important to me to honor our veterans and their families. My dad, brother, cousins, and my grandpa were in the military. I’ve only worked at Overland for two years, but these events have quickly become one of my favorite parts of the job. It’s a way to give back and show appreciation for our veterans.”

It’s clear that the Veterans at the event felt the love as well. Navy and Coast Guard veteran Ed Terry, who has attended Veterans Day breakfasts for years, was blown away by the “Hall of Honor.” “It’s meaningful because as a veteran, we’re being recognized for things that we did decades ago. And it’s nice to know that the Cherry Creek School System has a Veterans Day every year, and it’s rewarding to know that they appreciate the things that we did.”

My favorite memory was definitely seeing all the joy and connection throughout the evening,” Brant continued. “Students talking with veterans, families sharing stories, and everyone taking time to reflect and express gratitude. It was such a heartwarming atmosphere. I’ll never forget the smiles and kind words from our students, parents, and from Ms. Booker, our principal.”

The event was a massive success, with more veterans and their families attending

to see all of the beautiful tributes. “Just that I’m so proud of what we accomplished this year and so thankful for everyone who helped make it happen. The “Hall of Honor” truly reflected the spirit of our community and our gratitude for veterans. I’m already looking forward to next year’s celebration! Will it be a breakfast again or another evening event? Time will tell!” Brant concluded.
