Spring Sports 2024

With spring right around the corner, spring sports are also starting. And for seniors, this will be their last season of high school sports. Anyone interested in spring sports is welcome to play. The deadline to join for most will be February 27, as most of them start tryouts that week. Spring sports include baseball, girls’ soccer, girls’ golf, boys and girls lacrosse, boys’ swimming, girls’ tennis, and track. Anyone interested should join and see if they want to pursue that.

You may ask yourself why you should join any sports team in high school, and the answer is simple: experience. Many people make lifelong connections with the people they play against. You get to leave your comfort zone and experience new things you’ve never experienced. Another reason would be that you may be the person a specific sport sought.

You could be good at the sport and attract attention from colleges wanting you to play for them. Playing sports in high school is not just about playing but the opportunities and friendships you make along the way.
We should look into sports here in the Overland community, as many sports always need people, making it hard for us to get sponsorships and help. Overland used to be stacked with players in every sport, but gradually, people became uninterested in playing.

For example, we needed more players in baseball to make a varsity team. We would look for students to come out and try baseball because nobody wanted to play, causing us almost not to have an Overland baseball team. Try it out if you feel like you will need to improve at a particular sport. You have nothing to lose, and you’ll gain something with that because you may be a good player.

Playing a sport in high school is something that everyone should look into. You may like it, and you’ll also be helping out your school by participating. And the feeling of a game day is one of the best. Knowing that you’re going to have a game after school is one of the best feelings; it keeps you motivated and energized throughout the day. But as mentioned before, spring sports are right around the corner, and if you’re interested in joining, come out and try it out; get out of your comfort zone.

About the Contributor
I’m a senior at Overland High School. I’m a reporter and focus on sports analysis for the newspaper. This would be my second year at the Scout and I chose to join because I wanted to talk and report about sports. I’ve played varsity baseball since my sophomore year and play soccer.
